THE PROBLEM

H2S & Microbial-Induced Corrosion in sewer systems

In low-oxygen sewer environments, sulfate-reducing bacteria (thiobacillus) thrive in biofilm on pipe walls. They metabolize sulfates into H₂S gas — a colorless, “rotten egg” compound that reacts with surface moisture to rapidly degrade concrete. This Microbial-Induced Corrosion (MIC) is among the leading causes of structural failure in sewer infrastructure worldwide.

Oxygen drops ⬇️

Organic matter, heat & seasonal shifts create anaerobic conditions.

Bacteria thrive 🦠

Thiobacillus colonizes biofilm on pipe walls.

H2S produced 💨

Sulfates convert to corrosive hydrogen sulfide gas.

MIC begins ⚠️

Gas + moisture attacks concrete, reducing structural life.

🛑 AMX 5500 stops it

Antimicrobial ruptures bacterial cell walls.

WHY AMX 5500

Four reasons engineers specify it

24/7 antimicrobial action

Microban® Antimicrobial Technology disrupts and ruptures microbial cell walls continuously — built into the concrete matrix permanently.

No compromise to mix

Visually undetectable. No change in cure time, finishability, or coloration (unless requested). AMX 5500 volume counts as mix water for w/c ratios.

Lower long-term cost

Extends structural serviceable life by fighting corrosion from day one, resulting in less frequent replacements, fewer cleanings, and reduced chemical usage.

Broad-spectrum protection

Fights bacteria, fungi, mold, mildew, and lichen — effective in both high-demand infrastructure and residential cosmetic surfaces.

HOW TO USE

Simple to integrate into any pour

1
Mix before use

If AMX 5500 has been sitting for an extended period, mix well before use. Do not dilute.

2
Calculate dosage as mix water

Use 122–128 fl oz (0.95–1.00 gal) per cubic yard of concrete. Count total AMX 5500 volume toward your water-to-cement (w/c) ratio.

3
Add during active tumbling

Pour AMX 5500 into the mix while the drum is turning. Continue mixing for an additional 5–10 minutes for thorough distribution.

4
Pour & finish as normal

No changes to cure time, finishability, or color*. Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment.

*Let us know if tinting is required for treated structures within your municipality and/or project.

Third-party

Rigorous testing

AMX 5500 has been thoroughly tested by multiple reputable microbiological laboratories, consistently proving its effectiveness against the micro-organisms that attack and degrade concrete structures. Oregon State University’s College of Engineering evaluated the antimicrobial admixture using the ASTM C1904-20 standard, finding it extremely effective at reducing cement strength loss caused by microbially induced corrosion. Independent testing by EMSL Analytical under the ISO 22196 standard further demonstrated a microbial kill rate of 99.999% (5-log reduction) after just 24 hours of exposure. Rounding out the validation process, both Microban® and MarMac® conducted their own extensive internal testing, together contributing to the reliable, bulletproof formulation that AMX 5500 delivers today.
